چکیده

The afterglow emission from a spreading jet expanding in a circumstellar cloud is discussed. Prompt X-ray radiation and a strong UV flash from the reverse shock produced by the interaction of the jet with the cloud may destroy and clear the dust out to about 30 pc within the initial solid angle of the jet. As the sideways expansion of the jet becomes significant, most of the optical radiation from the high-latitude part of the jet may be absorbed by the dust outside the initial solid angle of the jet, but only the radiation from the part within the initial solid angle can be observed. We analytically show that the flux of the observational radiation decays as ∝ t (where p is the power-law index of the electron distribution) in the relativistic phase. This preliminary result motivates us to perform numerical calculations. Our results show that one break in the optical afterglow ligh curve extends over a factor of ∼ 3 in time rather than one decade in time in the previous jet model. These results may provide a way to judge whether GRBs locate in dense clouds or not. Finally, we carry out a detailed modelling for the R-band afterglow of GRB 000926.

Theoretical Implications of the Gamma-Ray Burst – Supernova Connection

Although observations of circumstellar shock interactions around supernovae are generally consistent with a ρ ∝ r wind surrounding the progenitor star, this is not true for GRB (gamma-ray burst) afterglows. However, GRB 991208 and GRB 000301C may be consistent with wind interaction if the injection particle spectrum is a broken power law. Circumstellar dust echos can place constraints on supern...

On the Optical Light Curves of Afterglows from Jetted Gamma-ray Burst Ejecta: Effects of Parameters

Due to some refinements in the dynamics, we can follow the overall evolution of a realistic jet numerically till its bulk velocity being as small as βc ∼ 10c. We find no obvious break in the optical light curve during the relativistic phase itself. However, an obvious break does exist at the transition from the relativistic phase to the nonrelativistic phase, which typically occurs at time t ∼ ...

Off-axis Afterglow Emission from Jetted Gamma-ray Bursts

We calculate gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow light curves from a relativistic jet as seen by observers at various viewing angles, vobs, relative to the jet axis. We describe three increasingly more realistic models and compare the resulting light curves. An observer at , where v0 is the initial jet opening angle, should see v ! v obs 0 a light curve very similar to that for an on-axis observer....

Whether gamma-ray bursts are highly beamed or not is a very difficult but important problem that we are confronted with. Some theorists suggest that beaming effect usually leads to a sharp break in the afterglow light curve during the ultra-relativistic phase, with the breaking point determined by γ = 1/θ 0 , where γ is the Lorentz factor of the blastwave and θ 0 is the initial half opening ang...

A systematic analysis of X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burst observed by XMM-Newton

This work is part of a systematic re-analysis program of all the data of GammaRay Burst (GRB) X-ray afterglows observed so far, in order to constrain the GRB models. We present here a systematic analysis of those afterglows observed by XMMNewton between January 2000 and March 2004. This dataset includes GRB 011211 and GRB 030329. We have obtained spectra, light curves and colors for these after...
